Mein Schiff 7 under new command – Captain Omar Caruana takes over entire TUI Cruises fleet on land
For ten years, Finnish captain Kjell Holm commissioned all ships in the Mein Schiff fleet, played a key role in developing the bridge of the feel-good ships and thus contributed to the continued success of the Hamburg shipping company. With the commissioning of Mein Schiff 7, the first new Mein Schiff to be built in five years, he passed the baton to the two experienced captains Omar Caruana and Jens Troier, who had already captained the ships together with Kjell Holm. Omar Caruana oversaw the construction of Mein Schiff 7 in the shipyard and was also the captain at the christening last Saturday in Kiel Bay.
The Maltese Caruana has been captain on board the Mein Schiff fleet since 2017. Omar Caruana boarded the first feel-good ship in 2009 at TUI Cruises as a navigation officer. He was later promoted to deck officer, safety officer and finally staff captain. He received his captain’s license after his training in Glasgow and had already sailed on cruise ships before taking on a command at TUI Cruises.
With the christening of the Mein Schiff 7, Captain Omar Caruana has not only opened another chapter in the successful history of Mein Schiff, but will now also embark on a new personal path. After almost 25 years at sea, 16 of which were with Mein Schiff and as one of the first crew members on board, Captain Caruana will in future oversee the fortunes of all TUI Cruises ships from land.
On the first voyage of the Mein Schiff 7 after the christening, J ens Troier took command and set off on Sunday for the first voyage to the North Cape and Spitsbergen. After a few trips to the north, the Mein Schiff 7 will travel the Baltic Sea for the rest of the summer before moving to its winter cruising area around the Canary Islands. Captain Jens Troier has been sailing the world’s oceans since 1996. First in the navy as a radio operator on a submarine. Between 1998 and 2001 he trained as a ship operations assistant (SBTA) at the state maritime school in Cuxhaven. He then acquired his nautical officer’s license there between 2002 and 2004. Troier has been at home in passenger shipping since 2008.
After working for other shipping companies, he joined TUI Cruises in 2010, where he initially worked as Chief Officer Safety and later as Staff Captain. Since April 2016, he has been the first man at the helm of Mein Schiff and the expedition ships of the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet .
